re-install would mean formattin the system drive and puttin a clean copy of windows on it
tht means all data is lost( on the drive)

there is also this thing called the repair install, which will save all ur settings but u wont get a performance gain

^^ I believe reinstall can be done without formatting the partition. Data should be safe but programs would have to be reinstalled (though it is still advisable to backup the data before attempting it)... In Win9x, I used to boot to dos, rename Windows and Program Files folder and then run the setup file from CD. After installation, I would delete the older folders. I am pretty sure the same can be done here...

According to a discussion at *groups.google.com/group/microsoft....+without+format&rnum=1&hl=en#34fc616d7d4047f1

You can delete the Program Files, Windows, and Documents and Settings folder. Then delete the following root files.
a.. Boot.ini
b.. Ntbootdd.sys
c.. Ntdetect.com
d.. NTLDR
e.. Hiberfil.sys
f.. Pagefile.sys
You will need to do this by booting from the XP CD and load Recovery Console.
You can then reboot with the XP CD and choose the location for setup. Do not format.
In any procedure as intensive as a OS change, make sure you backup all important data.

have you installed xp on a separate drive and your program files on a separate drive? if you have, just format the drive and reinstall. if not, delete the windows folder and reinstall. next time, partition in such a way that the operating system is in one drive and the program files in another
