Quantum teleportation achieved over 16 km

Scientists in China have succeeded in teleporting information between photons further than ever before. They transported quantum information over a free space distance of 16 km (10 miles), much further than the few hundred meters previously achieved, which brings us closer to transmitting information over long distances without the need for a traditional signal.
Quantum teleportation is not the same as the teleportation most of us know from science fiction, where an object (or person) in one place is “beamed up” to another place where a perfect copy is replicated. In quantum teleportation two photons or ions (for example) are entangled in such a way that when the quantum state of one is changed the state of the other also changes, as if the two were still connected. This enables quantum information to be teleported if one of the photons/ions is sent some distance away.
In previous experiments the photons were confined to fiber channels a few hundred meters long to ensure their state remained unchanged, but in the new experiments pairs of photons were entangled and then the higher-energy photon of the pair was sent through a free space channel 16 km long. The researchers, from the University of Science and Technology of China and Tsinghua University in Beijing, found that even at this distance the photon at the receiving end still responded to changes in state of the photon remaining behind. The average fidelity of the teleportation achieved was 89 percent.
The distance of 16 km is greater than the effective aerosphere thickness of 5-10 km, so the group's success could pave the way for experiments between a ground station and a satellite, or two ground stations with a satellite acting as a relay. This means quantum communication applications could be possible on a global scale in the near future.
The public free space channel was at ground level and spanned the 16 km distance between Badaling in Beijing (the teleportation site) and the receiver site at Huailai in Hebei province. Entangled photon pairs were generated at the teleportation site using a semiconductor, a blue laser beam, and a crystal of beta-barium borate (BBO). The pairs of photons were entangled in the spatial modes of photon 1 and polarization modes of photon 2. The research team designed two types of telescopes to serve as optical transmitting and receiving antennas.
The experiments confirm the feasibility of space-based quantum teleportation, and represent a giant leap forward in the development of quantum communication applications.

We are more concerned with Bookish studies and not research matter.The books we read today have got their 1st print 15-20 yrs back(outdated). IITs give this kind of platform but not all colleges do that. Moreover this level of research needs investment and devotion. Moreover the reservation thing is tearing the Educational system apart.

@Ecko : True. But inspite of this large population, we lack in skilled labour. A lot of people are followers of idiotic preachers(talking about fake ones). They just add to population and do nothing and are still getting bread with butter :mad:. They reduce the PCI of the country, increase population coz "Reproduction is the only art which even the most unskilled labour can do very skill fully :D" and they are just to name a few.

Why should they bother to stay here if they far better money with far more opportunity to grow as well as potentially better standard of living. They invested all their efforts by going into top institution in excessive competition, and that's the way they've "paid" already.
Moreover with reservations and lack of jobs in government jobs, what's the motivation? :rolleyes:
As for higher education in India, less said is better. B.Tech. is a joke, Europeans and Americans actually laugh (and rightly so) at the skill levels (particularly in CS) from students here.
Heck even IITs lag way behind in research. Rarely heard of a major research in IIT, and almost nill in CS.

(My knowledge of special theory of relativity is rather rusty but still...) Not possible. We have MASS. Photons don't. So we can't behave the same way photons do.

What is more important ? Being the first country to teleport data from point A to point B spending billions of rupees in its research or feeding millions of poor dying of starvation, making education more accessable, creating more employment opportunities, protecting the country from external and internal threats and bringing up the average standard of living of people to more respectable levels ???

Once the technology reaches mainstream levels we will obviously have access to it but at a fraction of the price we need to spend if we go about the way china is going.

Some things can wait. Others can't.

And seriously, please control your language and stop going offtopic. Otherwise special effects are gonna start coming in :wink:

Yes there are no reasons to stay in India as our majority of population don't even get the basic need...electricity and the water what else beyond they will think!!!
If u want some research material first (at your level even though) you will not get it here and ultimately will be imported from other countries!!! So Logically No Reasons for Engineers to stay in INDIA!!
but still everyone should say Proud to be India atleast! :p

True, India has largest reserves of Thorium (nuclear fuel usable element)This can be enriched using U-238 and made it to have fission to create large amount of energy. We dont have sufficient technology for that. We lack in resources inspite of being the fastest growing economy. and ya photons do have mass of the order of (10^-28)kg or but dont remm. the exact figure. String theory says that every matter made of molecules>atoms>elctrons and quarks are unidimensional strings. The theory posits that these strings can vibrate, thus giving the observed particles their flavor, charge, mass and spin. The earliest string model, the bosonic string, incorporated only bosons, although this view evolved to the superstring theory, which posits that a connection (a "supersymmetry") exists between bosons and fermions, two fundamentally different types of particles. They have no specific dimension but flat timespace is critical critetia to detmine their behavior. hoever we have two diff theories explaining the concept of strings with 11 dimnesions and 26 dimensions.these extra dimensions in general physics are not defined as they have negligible values and hence are neglected. The study of Quantum mechanics will reveal the truths and we must be a part of it.

look my point is simple...if u study in IIT to work for foreign country then u r not suppose to get subsidary for neither research nor fee concession...coz that money is paid from taxpayers pocket
To get that money sign a bond of 10 years to work for India..then do what u want rest of ur life.
And just like gautam said..there r many things urgently required here rather then spending billions on these research work....
instead we can research on bio fule, purifieng water, better crops, artificial rain etc...which will help us

I don't.
First of all they have already fought all the competition, against 5 lakh competitors and it's not like they got the seat for free. That effort has "costs" IMO.
Aside from that, how many government jobs are offered to those passing out from IIT or other such elite colleges? Very few.
And what's the point of benefit for the nation if they work for multinational companies here?
And it's a fact that it's because of the fact that these IIT and other elite students leave the country, the "lesser mortals" are able to get better jobs within the country.
Furthermore the government organisations are lax themselves and far away to leverage even half of the skill force that they pay for, so can they really account for the more skilled employees?
Finally, unlike few suggest here; It's no excuse for not providing infrastructure on the basis that "they leave the country" 99% colleges have appalling infrastructure, the rest 1% can at best be called average.
