1. What is the purpose of the computer? What all applications and games are you going to run? (Stupid answers like 'gaming' or 'office work' will not work. Be exact. Which games? Which applications? Avoid the word 'et cetera.')
Ans: Browsing the internet, watching HD videos, playing RPG and MMO games such as - Guild Wars 2, Neverwinter Online, Assassin's Creed III, Splinter Cell Blacklight, Dishonored, GTA V, etc.

2. What is your overall budget? If you can extend a bit for a more balanced configuration, then mention this too.
Ans: 60 - 65k. May go to 70k if absolutely necessary.

3. Planning to overclock?
Ans: No

4. Which Operating System are you planning to use?
Ans: Windows 7/8

5. How much hard drive space is needed?
Ans: 1TB

6. Do you want to buy a monitor? If yes, please mention which screen size and resolution do you want. If you already have a monitor and want to reuse it, again mention the size and resolution of monitor you have.
Ans: Need to buy everything. Monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers.

7. Which components you DON'T want to buy or which components you already have and plan on reusing?
Ans: UPS

8. When are you planning to buy the system?
Ans: first week of April OR June (Explained in point 11)

9. Have you ever built a desktop before or will this be done by an assembler?
Ans: Will get it assembled

10. Where do you live? Are you buying locally? Are you open to buying stuff from online shops if you don't get locally?
Ans: New Delhi. Open to buying from online retailers if the retailer in question is trustworthy. Like Flipkart.

11. Anything else which you would like to say?
Ans:

I'm in need of a desktop that can allow me to play current gen games on High/Ultra and next-gen games on Mid/High. Basically something that I don't have to worry about for 2-3 years. One point to consider is that I will most probably be moving out of my home in a year and will be taking the desktop with me when i go. Keeping this in mind, I'm looking for a small form factor case.

I'm currently looking at the Alienware x51. I believe that it checks all of the above criteria but overshoots the budget a little (as I will have to buy the monitor separately). However, I can buy the computer using the EMI option immediately.

Is this the right decision? Or should I wait for a couple of months, build up some savings and go for a custom rig. If so, what specs should the rig have?

The specs of the x51 are -

Processor 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3770 Processor (3.4GHz, 8MB Cache, with Turbo Boost Technology 2.0)
Operating System Windows 8 Single Language, English (64bit)
Optical Drive Slot-Loading Dual Layer DVD Burner (DVD+-RW, CD-RW)
Memory 8GB Dual Channel 1600 MHz DDR3
Hard Drive 1TB SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive with Native Command Queuing
Keyboard Alienware Standard USB 2.0 Keyboard (English)
Video Card 1.5GB GDDR5 NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 660
Mouse Alienware Standard Optical Mouse
Wireless Card WLAN Card DW1506

Your advice on the matter would be most appreciated. Thanks :)

You are basically wasting your money. Your proposed system is more of a show off rig rather than a gaming one.

Get the following:-

Intel Core i5 3570 @ 12K
Asrock H77 Pro/MVP @ 6.7K
Kingston HyperX Blue 1600 MHz CL9 4GB X 2 @ 3.5K
Toshiba 1 TB SATA HDD (DT01ACA100) 7200 RPM, 32 MB Cache, SATA 6 Gbps @ 4.1K
Seasonic Eco 600 600W 80+ Bronze PSU @ 4K
Sapphire HD 7950 3 GB GDDR5 VaporX OC with Boost @ 22K
Dell ST2240L 21.5" 1080P IPS Panel Display @ 8.6K
Logitech G400 Gaming Mouse @ 1.4K
Any good Keyboard @ 2K
Asus 24X SATA DVD R/W @ 1K
Corsair 400R @ 4.6K

Total: 70K

@OP: What is the price of the x51 ?
Somehow I find those specs pretty unbalanced. Assembling your own rig within that budget will have much better performance. E.g. the rig suggested by Cilus.

@Cilus: Edit/Add a 'k' to the 3570.
And why the asrock pro/mvp ? I thought that model was not ideal for OCing.
Though I cant find anything proc/mobo within that budget except the 8350 and the m5a97

fx 8350 (11000)
MSI 990FXA GD65 (9000)
Sapphire HD7950 (22000)
G.Skill ripjaws or Corsair Vengance 1600 MHz 4 GB x2 (4000)
Corsair TX650-M (6000)
WD blue or Seagate barracuda 1 TB (4000)
Asus Optical drive (1000)
Corsair 400R (4600)
Dell ST2240 22" LED (8500)
Gaming KB as per your choice (2000)
Gaming Mouse (1300)

total: 73400

The tx650m is semi-mod, CWT and overpriced.
Change PSU to one of the following

Corsair tx650v2 @ 5.4k
Seasonic S12II-620w @ 4.8k
Corsair GS600 @ 4.7k

@Cilus: Edit/Add a 'k' to the 3570.

OP is not going to overclock. So cilus's rig is good.

If you make the mobo a b75 then you can save money.
+1 to it

Thank you everyone for your inputs.

The price of the x51 on the official Dell website is 68,000. Inlcuding the Dell monitor suggested in this thread, the total would come down to around 76,000. The reason why i was interested in the x51 was that i could walk into a Dell store and get the pc through 0 interest EMIs. Whereas if I go for for a custom rig, I'll have to continue savingup for a couple of months more.

Another thing that I am giving weightage to is the form factor, I will be travelling next year and will be taking the pc with me when I make the move.

But all said and done, I don't want to waste my hard earn money on a pc that won't run my games. So I'd appreciate it if you could tell me why you find the specs of x51 unbalanced and/or unworthy.

Thank you once again, for so many prompt replies :)

The package is designed to look good on paper, as Cilus said (in different words). That setup is probably worth around 50k or less, if you purchase and assemble it yourself.

Pairing an i7 3770 (locked multiplier) with an 660 (1.5GB !! As if the 192bit memory wasn't enough) is pretty useless and shifts focus from the actual purpose, which is gaming.

i7 3770 + 660 = 32k
i5 3450 + 7950 boost = 32k = awesome !!

8gb dual channel is nothing to brag about.
Same for 1tb SATA 3.0Gb/s with Native Command Queuing. Actually I dont know what NCQ means. I hope it can beat the WD 1TB Black with all those terminologies.
With an i7 and a 660 inside that small case, what about airflow ?

In the end, actually it all depends on how the system suits you. The EMI and the portability(form factor) feature is something specific to you so I cant comment on that.

PS: FK has the EMI options also. Select a few reasonably priced parts from them. Dont know the exact emi details in FK, but just pointing out.

Guys, I was suggesting Asrock H77 Pro/MVP, not the Z77 one. That was a typo and I have edited that. As OP is not going to overclock, i5 3570 is more suitable than FX-8350.
