Investment bank Nikko Citigroup analyst, Kota Ezawa, has stated that Sony has managed to slash production costs on the PlayStation 3 by half.

In a December 27th statement for his bank, Ezawa is reported as stating that he:

"...applauds Sony's efforts to shrink the PS3's chips and tweak its design. Already such changes have cut the cost per machine to around $400 now, from above $800 just before it went on sale in November, 2006.

"We think the biggest factor here is that simplification has become possible through a reduction in the parts count, leading to a reduction in costs."

So, if the report is true, things for the PlayStation 3 would appear to be looking up. With Warner Brothers opting for Blu-ray - leaving Paramount and Universal as the only major studios not exclusively 'on Blu-ray' message - all we really need now... are some more decent games! Roll-on LittleBigPlanet and Killzone 2.

Prepare for a slew of "PS3 Price Slashed" stories' to emerge ASAP.

I don't think there will be an immediate price cut. Sony has made losses till today by selling it at prices less than their manufacturing costs. It's just recently that Sony has been able to keep the cost around $400. So, when it costs $400 for them, I don't think they will reduce the prices to make another loss atleast untill they reduce the manufacture costs more or till they break even from all the sales made.
