This will happen if there is data corruption. Do the following:
1. Check your hard disk for bad sectors.
2. Is your hard disk activity light coming on frequently in a sustained manner? If yes you could be having a virus.

use uTorrent and right click on the downloading torrent, set the download and upload speeds to ur choice. If you dont wish to upload much, set upload speed to 1 KBps. It shows 900 MB coz it doesnt matter the size of the complete file, but it depends on how much times same data has been uploaded So it makes sense

In torrents, the partially downloaded file too is shared with the other downloaders.., Hence it uses too much bandwidth, try the way mentioned by Giga...

Well, a simple solution is to Limit ur download and upload speeds.

To do this in µTORRENT, got OPTIONS > PREFERENCES > CONNECTIONS
Set the uplaod limit to 15 KBps and download to 0 (wich means unlimited).
U will hv to work out on wat upload limit and tyr of with different settings(setting it to 11,12,13,14 or 15) to GET BETTER D/LOAD SPEEDS.
For me its upload set to 12 KBps to and i get a d/load of 26KBps (wich is 208 kbps) using a torrent :)

I personally use µTORRENT and along with that use PEER GUARDIAN 2 (to limit the acces of unwanted ppl seeing/sharing my data) this is a safe practice :)

NOTE: The best practice is to hv a ratio of 0.5 (upload data divided by d/load data) to hv a perfect balance. Also, it is possible that the speed of the peer (the one who is uploading is at a lower speed than u(so even if u hav a good speed of 26 KBps but if the peer speed of upload is jus 3-4 KBps u can imagine the time duration).

By the way, check my PORT FORWARDING TuT (given in my signature), I hope it will make u much clearer in ur usage of µTORRENT as its an essential part of any torrent (i hv screehshots as well to help u in that case on that TuT page) :)

Well its a bad practice, as uploads affects ur d/laod speed too, so its better to set it to 50% of ur total d/load speed (for eg: set it to a range between 11-15 KBps to get a good d/load speed of around 20-25 KBps), saying by experience. :)
