power off button not working for shutting down

i have just installed win 200 pro and i have strange problem
i systematically shut the computer down......
and it gives the

"...computer is safe to be turn off"...

but after that power off button dont work...

i dont think it is mechanical error as it work to turn on the computer...

and i have tried resgistry edit as well but doesnot work
whats the problem.............?

Its already switched off.. No need to press the power off button..

is your cabinet ATX. ie..did it use to switch off automatically before installing win2000 Pro?

for now press and hold the power for 3 to 5 Secs. the system will get switched off.

my mother baord is indeed ATX
by the way i think its not windows 2000 problem but hardware it self

about first answer i think my computer is not off as every thing fan ,cpu seems running...(is running) though it says "safe to turn off'

i will try second option...

by the way is it mis intsalling or joing cable pins where one should not have joined...

a amatuer hardwaien just assembled the computer reading guides from the sites...

but other things are ok,.....

is it hardware problem...?

hey i dont think thats a problem as it had been the case for my computer but as i never use my computer in safe mode it shuts down directly switching off the CPU
