Hello,
My PC does not boot up. The monitor remains OFF. Also there is no flash on my hard disk LED. The keyboard gets detected though.

I suspect it to be a virus because there is no hardware fault (hardware examination has been done!). I think its a boot sector virus.

WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENED

While surfing the net my McAffe antivirus 8.0 showed a trojan horse on my System32/ folder in my C: drive ; it asked me to remove it , I pressed OK.

Then after a day my anti-virus got corrpted ; I was not able to scan any file for viruses , also my antivirus was shown as an unrecognisable .exe file .
When I used to scan a file for viruses , nothing used to happen.

The next day I tried to reinstall my McAffee 8.0 , but even after doing so my antivirus remained unrecognisable . So I figured out that it would not be safe to search the net.

I did a clean install(i.e. after formatting my drive C:) of Windows XP , but certain files refused to get installed. After the installation , the following things from XP were missing:
> System restore
> Defragmentation
> Internet explorer
> Windows Media Player
But still my games (Counterstrike Condition zero & GTA San Andreas) were working fine.I installed even DirectX 9.0c for my games (I did not install antivirus fearing that the virus is still there in system)

Next , I installed Windows Media Player 10 & then played counterstrike. Then suddenly my system restarted but did not boot up (It did not even show the POST bootup screen ) , my system hanged , nothing on my screen , and no indication of any boot progress . So I shutdown manually .

Then I turned it ON after some time. My PC booted up , and disk checking was done by XP and it said that "C:\Documents & settings\.....\Windows Media Player 10\...\wmp.xml is invalid " repairing....... , then XP got loaded and everything started . Then I successfully shutdown from my OS (XP) . Shutdown happened normally.

That was yesterday , today when I turn ON my PC , only the Keyboard LED glow only once . No POST screen on the screen , no harddisk LED glowing , screen is blank , power of system is ON , therefore no XP loading .

OBSERVATION

My system SMPS's (power supply) fan runs , system fan also runs , so no hardware has gone 'kaput' . Even my Processors fan works very well.

It was only after installing WMP 10 did the above happen ; more specifically due to that trojan horse described earlier.

I suspect this is the virus's deed.

Someone please suggest me a solution.

Thank you for reading my problem.

Yup it seems to be a boot sector virus...does your cd led flash when u turn on u r comp??? if so, then hopefully the virus only affects win os...So if u hav a linux live cd, boot from it and format your whole drive,....

Oh yes ! the CD LED does flash ON at startup , but now , nothing comes on screen.

WHAT HAPPENED TODAY

I inserted my Win XP bootable CD on my CD ROM drive and kept on pressing del during boot. I saw the HIS motherboard screen , with following data:

Intel Pentium 1.9GHZ
Memory 524788K......OK

The information viz. Primary master , Primary slave , Secondary master secondary slave , etc. did not show up.
it therefore seems that my removable drives were not detected as no HDD LED or floppy LED were glowing !

And after this the PC froze . All the fans were working , but no other screen came up . I , then shutdown manually .

Then I started the machine again (I removed the CD from the drive) , this time not even the motherboard screen showed up .

ANALYSIS
Now I doubt the power supply ? but it just can't be the power supply because
all the things were fine 3 days ago . What could be the reason behind this sudden problem. :-(

Anyone pleeeeeeeeeease help me !!!!!
