How many fans do you have in your cabinet ?

Also check whether the fan is properly seated on the processor and check for the thermal glue too

What temps does the processor rise up to? My pentium 4 used to shut down at 70*C by default, but my dealer said that was no problem and I should increase the temp threshhold to at least 80*C and he'll handle the warranty if it was an issue. Till now no probs.

I have faced the same probem with this config..

Processor is getting heat up bcoz .. Processr fan and Heat sink is dirty .. just clean it carefully.

If I am right .. you havnt opened the cabinet or cleaned it for ages ..
the biggest enemy is dust

my P4 3.0 Ghz 478 pin Prescott idles at 54-55*C.
a week ago the comp used to shut down on playing current games....well, i started using Intel Active Monitor software & set the Processor Zone upper threshold at 85*C (Default is 69*C). The comp is no longer shutting down even after an hour of gaming(POP 2 Thrones, FIFA'07, TOCA 3). Can I safely keep this threshold of 85*C indefinitely or will my CPU perish. Its working beautifully currently.

just try to check your CPU FAN AND HEATSINK AGAIN COZ its possible that your fan i spinning on slow RPM so DOWNLOAD EVEREST ULTIMATE EDITION FROM

www.softpedia.com
I got a Vantec Mach1 HSF for the CPU. It has a speed controller. Well, i checked temp(at idle)with Everest, which tallies with the Intel Active Monitor.
Even system zone 1(36*C) & system zone 2(41*c) tallies at idle.

I am getting rpms of 4038 with the Vantec at full speed. When i bring down the speed to 3030 I get increase in CPU temp to 61*C.

LOL! I don't control the fan speed, was just checking whether the controller
was doing its job! The fan speed is at max (+4000 rpms) at all times!
All i want to know is whether the CPU will absorb that kind of heat(82-83*C)
without any damage.

yeah it will without any damage till 70 or 75 but not further have to get adequate solution for cooling

IF YOU WANT TO maintain your pc by doing cooling solution then change your CPU thermal pasting and clean your heatsink

Well, i have applied AS5(just about 1 grain of rice in volume as per norms).I have tested with Intel stock HSF too, but it does no better than my current Vantec Mach1. The side panel is open.I have 2 80mm fans near the HSF to blow in air(tried reversing them i.e. as exhausts, but no go).
