I ain't afraid of nothin'
Hi guys,

I have a PC with intel e8400 3ghz, 2gb ram, nvidia 8400GS Zotac (which supports purevideo HD on vista) and am running Vista 32bit ultimate (customized nvidia evolution edition).
I actually watch lots of HD movies 1080p. I recently observed that CPU utilization goes to 70% or so when I play HD movie ( x264) . TO note that vista codec pack is installed on my machine and I have the latest NVIDIA driver.
Point is that I want the purevideo HD decoder to be decoding my HD movies so that CPU utilization can be minimized. Also I'm not sure how to get that pure video HD working.. any light here will be very much appreciated... !!!
(BTW.. a ffd show icon pops in the tray whenever I play the video but not the nvidia's icon..! should I install any nvidia software other than the drivers!?)

Get rid of the "external" Codec Pack (here, vista codec pack)

OR

Get "CoreAVC Pro" Codec (only x264 encodes). Its not FREE but very low CPU usuage, you can play upto 720p even in low-end setup with this.

How u playback the videos ?? Player ??

nvidia - PURE VIDEO => means video with out any effects , is called purevideo

vistacodecpack does nothing but enables ffdshow for decoding. I can clearly see some disturbance and waving in the video (when the guy plays drums in "LIke a virgin' by katyperry MTV MA) but when i switched to nvidia purevideo decoder the quality is very good.... but no gain in low cpu usage..! :(

Ya right.. .I know what purevideo means but i was referring to the decoder... and we need to pay for it... lol!! I got the full version torrent anyway... I gave in.... thanks guys!

I use JetAudio for all the mutimedia stuff. Actually the ffdshow integrates in whatever player I use. Yeah... but 720p videos already use less than 10% CPU on my system ... My prob is with a 1080p MOV files. I am not sure if they are in x264 encoding.

It could be the way the video was encoded, was it original??

Never tried the "nVidia" decoder. But "Purevideo" in simple words just softens the video & make it appear clean. Bad thing is the sharpness of the video will be reduced overall.

U shud try "CoreAVC Pro" if ter's too much CPU usuage.

I get around 40-50% CPU usuage for Full-HD Movies with "CCCP" Codec Pack+Media Player Classic Homecinema(MPC comes with the codec pack).

OR

Ter's always VLC Player which comes with internal codecs, check how it goes in it.
