This is the Audio device in your laptop. There is a known problem regarding to this Intel HDA card. First try this : *help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto

If it does not work, the read this bug report from launchpad : *bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/122560 . This report has a long list of replies, and some solutions too, check there.

Don't try the hard way. Follow the below link. Easiest way to get sound working on Gusty
*linuxtechie.wordpress.com/2007/10/19/getting-intel-ich8-family-rev-3-sound-card-to-work-in-gutsy/

BTW why don't you try Ubuntu Hardy (8.04). This problem is already resolved in that version

Type alsamixer in the terminal, it would open lots of audio channels. Some of them would be muted. Unmute all of them by pressing M and press up/down to increase/decrease the sound of that channel.
