No audio output device is installed

Right off the assembly line
Hi,

This might be one of the most common problem with sound drivers that I am facing, but problem is, any conventional fix which I have found on the internet, does not seem to solve the issue. The sound icon in the taskbar of my desktop has been putting up a red cross against itself, which means there is no audio output device installed. Also, there is no sound device in my device manager.

I have tried the following fixes -
1. Opened 'troubleshoot sound problems' from the sound icon context menu. It goes on 'detecting problem' and says - "Hardware changes might not have been detected". But there has been no hardware changes meanwhile. Still, I open device manager and perform a 'scan for hardware changes', but this does not bring up the lost sound device which has gone missing from device manager.
2. I thought this ought to be sound driver problem and downloaded '32bit_Vista_Win7_R268.exe' (mine has a 32bit Win7 OS) and installed it. It is successfully installed, but while restarting the desktop, the desktop does not get restarted properly and goes into some display problem (this is an existing issue with my desktop and previously sound was working perfectly with this display issue. The desktop can never load OS properly once restarted. But there is no problem while shutting down and started....weird!!)
3. I am having windows7 32bit and previously had Win XP. As drivers come preloaded with Win7 OS, I have tried to install drivers from my motherboard CD, but that says it is incompatible with this OS.

Can anyone please help me solve my problem ? I have bought a new speaker, but can not enjoy it for this issue.

Thanks in advance.

@OP: Please post the motherboard model, also try to download Ubunut and run it Live and check if sound works, if yes then its a driver issues, else RMA the motherboard. if the motherboard is out of warranty then get a sound card, it will always be better than the onboard audio, I recommend Xonar DG (~1.6K) it would make a great addition for your new speaker set.
