Recently, there was a problem with one of the computers on a two computer network. Both use windows xp. So I had to reinstall windows on one of the computers (black), which now has sp2. Now, the network is just not working.

When i click on workgroups, it shows the two computers (white) and (black) but as I click any of them, it says network previlages crap. I've had this problem before and I got round it but this time its just not working out. One more thing, the (white) computer is set to share its internet connection (dialup). When I run the network wizard, it changes the IP settings to manual and assings a specific IP. Now, is this normal? Why wont it accept the automatic setting for IP?

and if that is okay, then what should I set the IP on the other computer to?

Also, the white computer doesn't have sp2 installed, so that might create a problem.

SP2 not installed on white comp wont interefere with ur network
I assume u r using lan card for networking.
Go to my network places n click on the 'setup home netwo...'
The wizard will guide u through the process.
Create the disk when prompted or use xp cd on the other computer.
Under the autorun menu\additional tasks etc...
One would be a host n the other a client.
Ur lan should work now.
As for sharing the net ,Instead of using ics i reccomend using a proxy server.

back to the start

what you said is what I had done. But for the net setup disk, it says that I need it only if the other computer is not a windows xp pc, (black).

also, what the hell is a proxy server? I never quite understood that. I have used that internet sharing and it was working very very find, i don't think I want to change it.

Thanks,
Milind

It seems from your post that ICS is working flawlessly but you are having problems with sharing resources.
Make sure you have shared resources like a folder.Right-click on a folder you want to share>Properties>Sharing.
Give the appropriate settings.Oh before that make sure you have disabled Simle File Sharing.
Under Windows Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>View>Make sure at the bottom "Use Simple File sharing" is unticked.

If this doesnt work then create 1 account on each with the same credentials.ie the same username & same password & then logon with one & try accessing shares of the other.

When I run the network wizard, it changes the IP settings to manual and assings a specific IP. Now, is this normal? Why wont it accept the automatic setting for IP?

and if that is okay, then what should I set the IP on the other computer to?
.The first pc will be acting as a ICS server plus a computer on a LAN.Thats the reason why it doesnt set it auto. When you connect to the internet it will get a IP from the ISP.Set the second pc which will be accessing the internet through the first to "Obtain an IP address automatically".

also, what the hell is a proxy server? I never quite understood that. I have used that internet sharing and it was working very very find, i don't think I want to change it.
You can share a internet connection with the use of proxy server software.
Does the same job as ICS but in a more specialised way.
But since ICS is working fine for you I would suggest you stick to it.

kill? why kill?

I feel like killing myself.

Anyway, I reinstalled windows on the (white) system so both have service pack 2. Now in the (WHITE) system, I can see in the "workgroups" both the computers, but when I click on (black), It says that I don't have network previlages and all that crap. But on the (black) system, I there is no (white) computer on the "workgroups" thing. Also, there is nothing in the "Local area connection status" RECEIVING PACKETS; packets are only sent. while on the (white), packets are received and sent.

Please please please help
If anyone is willing, one could set up an msn chat session and help me out with this. please please. I repeat, I feel like killing myself.

Okay dude chill out.Take it easy will ya? :p

Did you try what I've suggested in my earlier reply?
Have you shared resources? Do you have the windows firewall enbled? If so then disable it from the control panel. Also make sure you dont have any other firewall enabled on either of the systems.
Try pinging the machines from one another.

that damned firewall (sp2), enables itself on its own!!!!! I don't know how to disable the thing. tried and I tried. Secondly, all the resources are shared( c drive, d drive, etc). they are shared from long time ago in bethlaham, so to speak.

I just bribed a couple of cops today (one way fine 100 bucks, I said I had only 30 bucks, so i got off the hook with that...). But anyway, I think the trip is cancelled. so there is no question of bribing. Haven't had the time to look at the network though...

Thanks anyway,

Bye for now,

solution!!!!

Well, guess what, I had no reason to kill myself but shoot the ever living crap out of the Network card. Yes, the card was faulty. Well, I didn't realise that because I had used another "spare" NIC and the network was still not working. But just yesterday, I took another different NIC and tried it. Guess what, both the previous cards were faulty!

thanks a lot folks for helping me out with this. Must say, it was quite a learning experience...
