I think they come bundled with SP2... u dont need to add any, its Plug and play I suppose ??

unfortunately, at my workplace, the drivers for usb flash drive and external hard drive are not installed (or uninstalled).

It cant be uninstalled, XP has native support of usb, either ur installed copy of XP is infected with virus or its corrupted.

If its corrupted u can repair using XP cd else u would have received a cd with ur flash drive which is a 3rd party driver.......................in most casesits not required but u cann try that.

What does it do when u connect the usb drive?

It tries to install driver for usb flash drive and fails.

actually, in my organization usb flash drive and external drives are disabled. I don't know how to enable them.

OH then its a different case, ur admin has disabled the access to the usb ports........................driver wont help u & its illegal to do so in an organization without admins permission.
This is done to prevent data theft.

I have admin rights on my machine.
I can use my nokia phone on usb port i.e. usb port is not disabled.

Rebooting
As I already wrote, SP2 came with USB driver bundled...

Availability of the Windows XP SP1 USB 1.1 and 2.0 Update

Now in ur case if u have SP2 but still having issue with USB Driver, may be u need to read this,

When you install Windows XP Service Pack 2, the USB 2.0 drivers do not appear to update

Only usb flash drive and external hard drive are not working. Other usb devices are working

Having admin right in a corporate network still does not make u the admin of the machine or the network.

If you have datacard in ur nokia try copying some data from ur comp ..................does it let you copy???

IF it does then call ur admin & ask them, if it does not let you copy then the usb drives data transfer is blocked.

Our office has such facility & I am also having the admin rights but then I still cant copy data from it. This is done by the admin when they craete network, they can even monitor remotely any machine without you knowing.

Didn't ur usb flash drive came with a CD??? ask ur vendor....................but the best would be asking the admin of ur network.

Only usb flash drive and external hard drive are not working.
Just spoke to my network admin guy & he confirms that by disabling certain registry entry the admin can stop/block the initialing of the usb drivers...................................thus preventing you to install & copy.

Other usb devices are working
bcoz they are installed under phone & modem or digital camera..................probably thats why.
