Broken In
Hi all,

I have an Airtel broadband connection with a USB ADSL modem (GlobespanVirata). It connects at 512 Kbps, but works only as 256 Kbps (downloads averaging at 30 Kbps).

Now is there any way I can make it to really work like it is supposed to?

Thanks for your time.

Thadeus.

All that depends on your plan.. You will get only 256 kbps if thats your plan.. That 512 kbps is the link speed.. Not the data transfer speed.

Well I am actually paying for 256 Kbps (unlimited usage plan) only. But it is only lately that my connection started showing up as 512 Kbps. That is why I did not call customer care and resorted to help from you people.

Thanks Kalpilk, you have a valid point there. But my connection used to show as 256 Kbps and how could it change to 512 without me doing anything? All I wanted to do was to make the most out of it. Guess there is no use in being greedy.

Yes.. Airtel has recently upgraded the link speed because they provide double speed in the nights.. So you will get 512 kbps in the night! All this happens from their server side.. You dont have to do a thing!

@Thadeus, don't confuse with the connection speed with download speed!!
Your plan is 256 kbps unlimited, so you can download at 256kbps. Airtel may set the
connection speed to 256 or 512 kbps!! Also you can download at 512 kbps at night.
I hope things are clear now.

256 kbps = 256 kilo-bits per second... In the connection speed that we usually read, it is in kBps (kilo-Bytes per second) - so, 35 kBps => 35 x 8 = 280 kbps...
