I bought a Netbook on the 16-Oct-2012 for accessing Internet and News while I am travelling and staying for long periods away from home. However the buying experience was equally important! I wanted to buy a DOS Model with Atom Dual Core CPU with 2 Gb Memory and Install Windows 7 Starter Edition On it myself via external USB DVD Drive which I did at the shop in Nehru Place Delhi. This purchase was long overdue since this time last year.
1-Acer Aspire One AOD270 [NU.SG.ASI.003] Glossy Screen Intel Atom N2600 1.60 Ghz/1 Mb L2 Cache 10.1" Screen 320 Gb HDD, 2 Gb DDR-3 Memory [Preloaded with Linupus Linux] and Windows 7 Drivers DVD Bundled with Carry pouch-Rs 15600.00
2-Transcend 8X/24X DVD Writer USB-Rs 1850.00
3-Windows 7 Starter Genuine Edition-Rs 2500.00[ can be activated only from India] The problem of changing desktop wall paper is solved as provided in the google video This OS is meant only for netbooks and can do all basic tasks very easily like surfing, E-Mail via Windows Live, Windows Security Essentials but becomes slow when downloading updates. I suggest instead of MS Office use Kingsoft Office 2012 which is free. MS Office 2010 became very slow & so I removed it. After Installation please install Service Pack-1 for Windows 7 from the web or buy a Original Disk with SP_1 for Rs 100/- more. I was short of cash at the shop and hence bargained hard for price reduction.
4- Microsoft USB Optical Mouse 100-Rs 350.00
Total Paid Rs 20300.00 with Bill after checking all the products at the shop partitioning the Hard Drive myself Installing Windows 7 Starter and checked the working of MTNL 3G Data Modem at the shop.
The below mentioned models are available as per the survey which I did on 11-Oct-2012 In Nehru Place Delhi
1-The Same Acer Model as above in white color with preloaded Windows 7 Starter Edition is Rs 16900.00 however no Installation Disk or Driver Disk are given. The License key sticker is pasted below and one can make a recovery disk of the Installed Windows & Drivers immediately after purchase. So one would again have to buy a External DVD Writer For this.
2-ASUS R051CX Black with the same specs of Acer but with 1 Gb Memory[Not Upgradable] DOS Operating System is available For Rs 14000/- ASUS Brand Shop. This Model in Red Blue White with Windows 7 Starter Edition and MS Office Starter Edition 2010 preloaded cost Rs 16000/- but memory is again 1 Gb Only[Not upgradable soldered to motherboard]. Also a lot of crap software come installed in the ASUS.
3-HP Mini 110-4108TU Glossy Screen Atom N2600/320gb HDD/2Gb RAM/10.1' Screen/DOS OS the lowest I could get on immediate cash purchase was Rs 16200/- This does not come with Windows 7 Driver DVD or carry pouch.
4-Toshiba NB510-A1110 All specs of Acer and preloaded with Windows 7 Starter Editon MS Office 2010 Starter Norton Antivirus for 60 Days Trial and Adobe Reader but again no enclosed Windows Installer Disc or Driver Disc so buy a external dvd drive and make a recovery disc of the same. Price Rs 17900/- with carry pouch.
5-Lenovo S110-328520 Same as Toshiba Price Rs 18800.00 the costliest of all.
After u buy the netbook and install windows 7 +SP1 on it disable all automatic updates keep only firewall and antivirus on. All the above netbooks can run only Windows 7 and not Windows XP as no drivers are available for XP.
For my needs I got the bang for my buck with a Original Installer Disc always in Hand to format and Re-Install Windows whenever I need. Will Activate my Copy of Windows after 25 days from now!
