Monitor Native Resolution.

I read somewhere that the max. resolution that a monitor can display is called the native resolution.

However the nvidia control panel marks 1280x768 as my native resolution and at the same time it allows me to set resolutions upto 1600×1024. In some resolutions above 1280x768. the monitor display " Mode not supported" while some reso. above 1280x768 do work.

What is the true max resolution that my monitor can display and why is my native resolution 1280x768(marked by nvidia control panel) which doesnt seem to be the max resolution

The monitor is a 22in HCL VGA only LCD bought 5 years back.
Theres no Vga prot on my GPU so m using DVI-I to VGA adapter.
