When I switched on my comp, after the initial boot up process before starting windows, I got a message stating " windows could not start due to missing or corrupt /windows/system32/config/system press r to repair using your win xp cd "

I booted the system, used the boot from CD option from the cmos setup then used the repair option, and now my system is working. All the repair option did was to take me to the command prompt, I just typed dir checking for my data files, everything was safe, thank god, and then I typed exit. Thats all. and now the system is as it was before this happened ...... I cant figure it out , just what did repair do ??? . how to prevent it, if it happens again ? AND MOST important WHY did it happen in the first place......

thnkx guys...

When u restarted ur pc and everything is working fine, didn't u get "Windows just recovered from a serious error" and asked u to report it ? U could had seen what was the actual error was when u click on more info.

This happened to me a few times, when i was using some program and it was not responding and i try to force end task it, but its auto-restarted itself .. I also remember it happened 1 time when there was power failure many times and i didn't had the UPS then - direct power - and it was going ON and OFF.. after 3-4 restarts.. i switched off the PC, when i tried to start the pc after several hours, some kind of serious error has occured. Dunno if its the same as yours, but that's my story.

no I did not get "Windows just recovered from a serious error" ...... this happened when my UPS shut off by itself , ie the computer switched off , most probably during starup without going thru the shutdown process ... I'm not sure as I switched it on and was not in the same room, by the time I came back it had switched off and I restarted and got this error message...
and used the repair, as I posted above....
But still just what did repair do ??? . how to prevent it, if it happens again ? AND MOST important WHY did it happen in the first place......
