Loopback address is a special IP number (127.0.0.1) that is designated for the software loopback interface of a machine. The loopback interface has no hardware associated with it, and it is not physically connected to a network. The loopback interface allows IT professionals to test IP software without worrying about broken or corrupted drivers or hardware.

127.0.0.1 is a loopback network connection.
This means that if you try to connect to 127.0.0.1, you are immediately looped back to your own machine.

Yeah, must see Wikipedia

My advice would be never to use the ping command with loopback IP. It wont' affect the fast comps today, but somehow it may eat up your resources within seconds.

OK!

Then here is my question..
If 127.0.0.1 is a loop back address and ping back...

Now why does

127.0.0.2
127.0.0.3
127.0.0.4
...
...
...
127.0.0.255

Address ping?
are they also loop back addresses? if not why do they ping?
:)

Hmm, did you check what is the message that you get when you ping 127.0.0.x? It is getting reply from 127.0.0.1 always... Not sure why though.
