Lets start Folding@home

This initiative is known to many, followed by more. Folding@home is a noble effort from Stanford, developed and operated by the same institution. Folding@home is simply a distributed computing project for disease research that simulates protein folding, computational drug design, and other types of molecular dynamics.

The project uses the idle processing resources of thousands of personal computers owned by volunteers who have installed the software on their systems. Its primary purpose is to determine the mechanisms of protein folding, which is the process by which proteins reach their final three-dimensional structure, and to examine the causes of protein mis-folding. This is of significant academic interest with major implications for medical research into Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease, and many forms of cancer, among other diseases.

To be very precise about the scope of folding and our part in it, its just running a simple piece of software in our PC while we download our songs, play our games, watch videos or browse around. The main agenda is to contribute in folding by downloading and running the free Folding@home software from Stanford University. Once installed the software runs behind the scenes using otherwise unused computing time.

This is a voluntary effort, not a mandate and will not severely impact any resource utilization, CPU bound applications or games in our PCs, neither its a harmful application which poses any threat whatsoever.

It a call for all TDF members to join the cause and start folding today. Many forums have already contributed millions of cycles. Why not us. Lets help the scientist in their quest to make the world a better place, without Alzheimer's or Cancers, by crunching some numbers for them:)
