Desktop all the way.
I had pretty much similar requirements. I wanted to game and run system admin application , like VMWare , VS , etc. But with the ease of portability.
Spent almost 60,000rs buying an Acer aspire laptop. The one in my signature.
While I could easily pull of system management and development tasks but gaming took its breath always.

Eventually , ended up buying a Desktop after spending another 60k. Now , I don't use the laptop much unless I want to remotely connect to VMs and desktop.

It is best to buy desktop , it is cheaper and customizable and the main pro in desktop is the standalone monitor , laptops have poor display with less contrast and viewing angles.
