LAN trouble

I have an HP nx6120 laptop and a HP dx6120 desktop PC.
Is there any way to directly connect the 2 with a LAN cable using the LAN ports?
I tried connecting the 2 but nothing happened. Even the network setup wizard did not help in any way.
Both run on Windows XP SP2.
