i use my system mainly for gaming. will increasing my ram to 2gb give a boost in performance or is there something else i'd be better off upgrading? my sys specs are:

ASUS A8N-VM (nvidia 6100 chipset) mobo
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice 939pin (L1 cahce 128kb L2 cache 512kb)
I-ball Grabit cabinet Navtech 450Watts PSU
512x2 Transcend 400MHz RAM (2.5-3-3-8)
Sapphire Ati Radeon X1600 Pro 256mb DDR2 (RV530)
Hitachi Deskstar SATA 80Gb 7200rpm HDD
Lite-On Combo SOHC-5236V
Microsoft Windows XP Pro SP2 (32-bit)

Dude, if u are planning on getting another 2x512Mb to make a total of 4x512Mb = 2Gb, I will suggest dont do that, it will NOT increase the performance, NOT AT ALL, I will not be surprised if you get a lower performance in the end.

Either you can sell ur existing ram and get a 2Gb, or sell off your processor and upgrade to a dual core, or sell mobo+procy+ram and get X2 3600+ brisbane with M2N-E and 2Gb DDR2-667 and OC the processor, this will give you a heck of a boost.

^^^ adding more ram wont slow down ur system.
but if u add 4 chips of 512 and all dont hav same latencies then dual channel mode wont be enable and this in turn wud slow down ur pc and if u add 2*1gb sticks then dual channel mode will be enabled

In case of certain MBs such as NForce4 Ultra, I have read that 2x1GB 400MHz(as an example) will work @ 400 and when all the four slots are with another similar 2x1GB 400MHz, it will work @ 333. In such a case it should degrade performance.

^^i've got 2x512 presently and i'll add a 1gb card. i guess that means dual channel will stop working.

In your case, u will find it slower because u will be running the modules in single channel mode. and if u add 2x512, most likely they will be at DDR333, again resulting in lower performance.

I have been using 2x1GB for the past several months and the and since then I have disabled the virtual memory and never experienced any problem.
