Told you not to get an IDE drive. Anyway, change the jumper setting on the Writer.

Your OS is trying to BOOT from the Optical drive. Try to get into the BIOS as soon as you start the system, set the 'first boot device' to the HDD which has the OS on it. Save the BIOS, and exit.

Your hardware installation should be fine, it is not confusing installing an optical drive.

I'm running a bit late for an interview right now, but check this video out: *www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ds1-JmbhGRM

It should give you an idea what a jumper does. If you still can't figure it out, then just pull that jumper lead out and trying plugging in the drive and booting the PC.

Configuring an IDE drive to be either Master or Slave is done with the jumper pins on the drive, these pins are nearly always between the Power connector and the IDE ribbon cable connector. Each manufacturer has different pin configurations for either Single drive in a computer, Master or Slave. Most often Single drive and Master are the same setting.

Read the manual for the setting, and configure it. It will tell you how the jumper setting should be, to keep your drive as 'slave'.

It's not a problem. That's how Windows usually recognises blank media.

but previously if i had inserted a blank dvd then the words dvd used to appear instead of cd.

and it even used to recognize the free space.it showed free space:0 bytes.
used space:-0 bytes.

As long as you can read an entire DVD/burn it to full capacity, there is no problem. Try that and then report if there is a problem please.

don`t worry man, winxp do no suport dvd burning, so you may not be seeing the free space for your dvds. May be because of this the blank dvds are shown as cd and not as dvds. Use nero or other burning softs.

WinXP support cd burning only.

^^ If you can burn at the speeds your drive is rated..you are fine. Forget about nomenclature.
