install xp over vista

i want to install xp over vista
and i don't want to do clean installation
is there any way so that i don't have to format my hard drive

after googling a lot i find a way-

install xp in a new partition, then set xp the default os and format the partition in which vista is install (it's gonna work or not???)


if i do a clean installation do i have to format the whole hdd or only the partition in which the vista is installed???

You do no need to format whole HDD. just format the partition in which you need to install XP.
If you do not need vista,just format the partition and install XP.
You need to backup the data,if any there,before u do the format.
