1. What is the purpose of the computer? What all applications and games are you going to run? (Stupid answers like 'gaming' or 'office work' will not work. Be exact. Which games? Which applications? Avoid the word 'et cetera.')
Ans:
  • Will mainly be used for watching movies and casual(nongraphic intensive) gaming (DOTA 2, FIFA, platform games).
  • Planning on exploring newish games so it should be able to run these in low settings.
  • Also might use this to build some prototype Deep Learning models (infrequently) so will greatly prefer Nvidia
  • Looking to build an SFFPC

2. What is your overall budget? If you can extend a bit for a more balanced configuration, then mention this too.
Ans: Around 50k. yes, can extend the budget.

3. Planning to overclock?
Ans: Strictly no

4. Which Operating System are you planning to use?
Ans: Windows for gaming. Might dual boot a Linux Distro(Debian)

5. How much hard drive space is needed?
Ans: Flexible about this as I have 2 external HDD (2TB+500GB). 250-500GB SSD should be ideal

6. Do you want to buy a monitor? If yes, please mention which screen size and resolution do you want. If you already have a monitor and want to reuse it, again mention the size and resolution of monitor you have.
Ans: yes. 22inch monitor at least FullHD.

7. Which components you DON'T want to buy or which components you already have and plan on reusing?
Ans: need everything except DVD drive

8. When are you planning to buy the system?
Ans: Next month. Can wait for better hardware/price. I guess Diwali is coming up, should I wait?

9. Have you ever built a desktop before or will this be done by an assembler?
Ans: I have not. But would love to build this one on my own. Any links to video/text guides are welcome

10. Where do you live? Are you buying locally? Are you open to buying stuff from online shops if you don't get locally?
Ans: Bengaluru. Yeah open to buying online. Please add links if you can.

11. Anything else which you would like to say?
Ans:
  • Because of my requirements, I am leaning towards building an SFFPC but would love to hear any counter-arguments.
  • I am thinking about a i5 8400 + GTX 1060 build. Not sure if I need so much performance though.
  • The Case should have Ethernet and >=2 USB ports.
  • Looks over volume would be preferred for the case
  • Inbuilt Wifi card with motherboard will be a plus

No replies huh? Ok, I will start.
After researching a lot, I decided to increase the budget to 75-80K.

Some observations:
  • ITX motherboards cost ~12K while M-ATX costs 7-8K
  • Can't find any SFX PSU to fit inside a small case like Node 202
  • Ram prices are higher than what I expected. So decided to got for 8x1 GB RAM for now. Will add one later on
  • Intel CPU increased quite a lot so decided to go AMD route
So here is what I got so far:

3. Fractal Design Node 202
4. NZXT H200
5. NZXT H400
6. Cooler Master Q300L + 2 case fans

You can also buy components from sites like SMC International or Amazon, You will get at low price maybe but you should be good at DIY build..

But again I would like to know the kind of games you shall be playing??

Some questions:
1. How does one compare motherboards. Is it just no of SATA/M.2 ports, audio chipset, no of ram slot, no of pci slot, USB 3 gen support? Also does audio chipset really matter?
2. How does this 13K motherboard compare to a 8K motherboard. Say to MSI B450M PRO-VDH (7k).
3. Why this RAM over LPX(1k cheaper)? Better timings? overclockablity?

1) Better quality mobo will use better quality components,VRMs(good VRMs ensures longevity and less heat generation),Better audio chip and is very feature rich and with more number of ports
2)13k mobo is obviously better than 7k mobo
3)RGB but if you want cheaper RAM then get LPX
