how to stop ads on net

These days almost all websites seem to route thru various ad sites and other social networking sites.
Many a times I see messages like waiting for facebook.com, google.com, zedo.com etc in browser status bar when i refresh a page or go to next page on many websites.

What makes ad world on the net show me all those items I had just viewed here and there on sites like ebay, flipkart etc.

How do they really track me? Is there any way to bypass or prevent this.

First check if you are not attcked by AdWares! Go to chrome> extension and search for any suspicious extension. Then use AdBlock as mentioned above and please 'WHITELIST GOOD WEBSITES"! Ads are the only way for most webmasters to earn money and pay for hosting/maintaining a website. Show some kindness here :)

with every click I see 'waiting for facebook' 'waiting for sdlcdn.com' 'w3snoop.com' and so on, at least 3 - 4 more such connections before the page is loaded.
I guess those having > 1 mbps link wont even notice it in status bar

I have installed ABP for now. yet to see how it works.

Blame cookies. The sites scans for cookies and show ads based on your browsing history.
You can use a combination of "Bluehell" and "NoScript" add-ons on Firefox.

Also you can install LightBeam to see how websites tracks you in a beautiful Graph diagram.

Thanks a lot!! I have also installed Lightbeam and it also allows user to select sites to block. The internet speed seems to have slightly increased as well after blocking various third party sites.
