i hav win Xp pro and want to start the computer in DOS mode. In win 98 SE we have an option restart in MS- DOS mode in the shut down menu. Is there any way in which we can do it in win XP?

Google it dude..
This is what I got:
Neither 2000 nor XP can be booted into DOS as a bootup option, at least not without using startup disks. In both cases they have an msdos.sys file in the root of c:\, but they're just blank files. You can choose "safe mode - command prompt" when starting up using the F8 key, but you'll still have to log in for security reasons.... and all it is is a dos emulator.

I think he is aking for dos from win xp to access ntfs partitions. There is a utility for that. Copy that util to ur bootable floppy to mount ntfs in dos.
U can download the image from *www.ntfs.com/boot-disk.htm

Actually Windows XP doesnt hv such option!
Either u can install Recovery console (works like DOS) or u can install MS-DOS separately, which will give u an option to boot into DOS in boot loader.
