how to format a disk using fdisk in linux

i have recently got a acer laptop which shipped with linux shell only now i have deleted that partition using a recovery disk of red hat 4 and now i need to create a FAT32 partion so that i can instal XP on my laptop. when i try to boot using a XP bootable i got a error that no harddisk found. plz provide me a sol.

Right off the assembly line
You souldn't need to format / repartition the HD; the XP setup procedure is fully able to do it for you.
But, if it say "no harddisk found", it mean exactly that; it probably don't recognize the particular HD-controlled your laptop use.
A specific driver is needed, for when the setup procedure say something like "Hit [F6] to supply a driver disk...".
You should be able to get the driver visiting the laptop manufacturer's website.

i am too planning to fdisk my lenovo 3000 y 500 laptop. Any idea , if iam likely to face similar prob??? the 10 gb autorecovery partition is all bakwas and i want to remove it.
