^^ booting the OS from pen drive will be painfully slow - instead why not get SSD/HDD drive - if you use the pen drive to install XP on it.

anyway, have a look at here :

your laptop has a DVD drive - so for some immediate job why not use some linux distro ( just download and write it on a CD ) which comes with some most useful apps - after you are done with your work just save the file to the pen drive.

Main Page - Linux Mint

There are new methods to boot from USB Drive.
Please share, if anybody used these utilities to boot from USB.

1.
Boot From A USB Flash/Pen/Key Drive

HP Programmes support.
HP Drive Key Boot Utility - HP Business Support Center

2.

MakeBootable is a free software which lets you convert your pen drive into a bootable media, After making your pen drive bootable with makebootable you can use your pen drive like a windows xp bootable cd.

Read more: Make your pen drive bootable with MakeBootable

if you want to Install your entire OS ( say XP ) n a USB PD then follow the method on post no. 2.

If you only want to make a bootable PD then get this :
windows : WinToFlash - Install Windows from usb - Home page
Linux : *www.linuxliveusb.com/

d6bmg

BMG ftw!!
TO boot for pendrive, you need to change the priority list of the boor drives and you need to assign the highest priority to the USB drive.

Thank You, Both.

I want to make some point clear:
1.
I want to Install (Say XP or Linux) from Pen Drive.

2.
I want to install (Say XP or Linux) in a Pendrive, i.e. in substitute of Hdd, in case Hdd gets error to boot from Hdd.
This can be installed from a pen drive.
It should be a dedicated Pen Drive for OS (Say XP or Linux).

This will help in getting the files (save the file from formatting of C Drive) from a corrupted OS (Say XP or Linux).
3.
I want to install portable OS (Say XP or Linux).
This can be used in any PC or Laptop or
I have to use it as for a particular System only..

What is the meaning / purpose of 'HP Drive Key Boot Utility'.

Sorry again, Please help in answering again to clear this point from Post No.5.

there's no need to install the entire windows OS ona PD specific to your pc on a PD .. this can be done but the process is very complex .. the thing you need is a PE windpows and make a bootable PD from it and live linux on a PD .. that's it.

1. Post No. 6 (using normal windows install disc iso )
2. For Linux ( live distro ISO ): Install any linux on USB flash drive | Unixmen
For Windows - you have to make/find a winPE ( using either Xp or win 7 ) ISO and use wintoflash to make a bootable PD.
