how to arrest rust inside ups!

This is what happened, about 2 years back my APC ups battery died but i continued to use it as if nothing happened and yesterday i decided to replace the battery . to my horror one connector of the battery had corroded off so had to replace that as well and the acid also attacked the metal panels meant for support.
my question to you all how to clean those metal panels and protect from further corrosion

Take it to an APC service center.
One question... Why did you keep on using that dead battery UPS and when you that it was not working fine????

it was working fine only it used to go off when the power went out otherwise it had no problem
and it required the battery in the circuit to function properly

Scrap the rust off and cover the exposed metal with enamel(varnish).
