How 2 capture on screen activities in an editable.avi file?

dear all,

i want to capture some on screen activities (say, when i'm working
in Adobe Primiere, or, Playing Doom 3) in an .avi / .mpeg file.
i am aware of some appz (say, Macromedia Robo Demo) which
does almost the same thing... but it produces a protected .swf file
which can only be used from Robo Demo itself, u cannot even
convert it to .avi / .mpeg.

but i've seen a lot of tutorials on 3D Max, Photoshop etc. where
simple .avi files were used which were intentionally captured,
then edited.

now, i want to know which software is there for this purpose.

plz help.

P.S.:
Camtasia Studio v2.1 is undoubtedly wonderful & much
more than easier to use than Macromedia Robo Demo when
u r trying to develop any eHelp / eLearning solutions.
but, the main problem with it, it works in very low
frame rates.

what i'm trying to mean that... u can never be able to
capture any animation/game/movie or, virtually anything
which has a playback rate of nearly 25 fps or, more
(For PAL systems) using Camtasia Studio v2.1.

for example, if i want to capture the visualizations of
Winamp (AVS presets which comes with Winamp) while playing
a song in Winamp (to play any visualizations, u must play
a song), Camtasia Studio warns me that it's running at a
very high frame rate (which is nearly 25 fps) & it may not
be recorded properly.

i use a P-IV 2.8 GHz Intel HT processor, an Intel D865GBF
Motherboard (800 MHz FSB), 1 GB DDR RAM (400 MHz).
I work in Win 2000 Server & Win XP SP1.
Camtasia Studio v2.1 advised me to work in
256 color mode (8 Bit Low) & disable the graphics
adapter's hardware accelaration so as to capture anything
which has a "high frame rate". i did exactly as it said.
but, i've seen that the recorded videos [of the normal
AVS visualizations of Winamp] has a very very low frame
rate (only 4 to 7 fps) and natuarally, the output
is something which is playing in "slow motion" and not
worthy of use.

now, is there any other softwares available with which
u can record any portion of a game / or, movie or,
anything which has a playback rate of nearly 25 fps ??
i believe, there exists something. plz help me.
till, this time, i've found nothing while searching
the net.

plz help.

Hey Dude just few years ago i tried a software called "Snag IT"

Give it a try it captures video / captures snaps in jpeg

sreevirus

Certified Nutz
try this:
go to camtasia recorder>tools>options>
here, uncheck auto configure in the video options. u will have a capture rate of 5.0 frames per sec....set it to a higher rate...say 16 or 24 frames /sec and try....
however, this cud be resource consuming...terminate unwanted background processes when capturing....

@ quadmaster...snagit is also from techsmith, which makes camtasia studio...it only captures still screenshots, not videos...:)

thank u all for your reply.

dear sreevirus,
unfortunately, ur suggestion doesn't work. u r advising the same
thing as written in the help file of Camtasia Recorder. It may
work if u have a good 3d accelarator card with atleast 128 mb DDR RAM
like Asus Geforce MX pro etc. which I don't have right now :(

and moreover, the .avi files generated with Camtasia Recorder
is not editable. I've tested with Adobe Premiere Pro v1.5,
Pinnacle Studio v9.0 & Ulead Media Studio Pro v8.0 ... all are
simply crashing when I try to import the .avi files created with
that app. At first I thought it was TCC codec that u have to
install explicitly, but later I found that problem lies with the
program algorithm itself....which simply prevents u to edit
the .avi files with other popular & powerful video editing programs !

dear Slam Team,
FRAPS is no doubt good, but when it comes to capture the
activities of AVS presents playback, it simply fails. I've seriously
tested it with a PC with P-IV 3.0 [HT], 915G m/b [Intel], 1 GB DDR RAM
[400 MHz] .... fps dropped to 10 which is not at all acceptable :(

dear it_waaznt_me,
plz let me know what software u r suggesting on DIGIT DVD JAN '05 .

Recently i'm working with ACA Capture pro v4.31. Hope that will
help !
