Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (Hitachi) today announced that it has met its commitment to begin shipping the world’s first one-terabyte hard drive (HDD) to retail customers within the first quarter of 2007. The Deskstar 7K1000 began shipping to retailers and e-tailers in March 2007 with inventories reaching critical mass in April 2007. CDW is among the first organizations to make the terabyte hard drive available to customers. More information is located at www.cdw.com/storage.

Announced at CES 2007, the Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000 hard drive delivers superior performance and reliability, as well as leadership capacity, to meet the needs of consumers who want to create, share and store their digital information in ever increasing volume. At a suggested retail price of $399 (USD), colossal storage capacity is more affordable than ever before.

Direct conversion does not even give you a rough estimate of the price. For all we know, it could end up costing double that price in India. So, does anyone know the Indian price of this one? Is it there in India yet?

I am in the market for a 1 TB drive and am heavily leaning in favour of the Western Digital MyBook Pro. They have specially been designed to complement MacBook Pros and Mac Pros. But it would cost somewhere around Rs. 27,000 which is quite expensive. And that too, I have to find a way of having it bought in and shipped from Goa, because it is a lot more expensive in Kolkata. :(

Hey aayush, why don't you go in for two 500GB drives which will come to around 18k (though they would have only FW400 on them). Maybe glue them together to make em look like a 1TB drive...

You haven't seen how wide the 1 TB hard drives are.

@goobimama, LOL! :lol:

FireWire 800 is an absolute must and I really don't want to own three external hard drives. :p

Considering the thing that I am filling out my almost 1 TB space (500 + 3x160) with no more free SATA ports left on my board...it would be great to upgrade to two 1 TB disks with 1 TB solely as backup :D

...and yeah it will definitely cost AT LEAST 5000 but i was just hoping against hope :p

Talking of sharing HDD space, anyone know if there is a casing available for NAS? Or what's the best option for a branded NAS these days (in a small quantity of around 200GB)...
