What does DDR Ram Actually do?...

My ram is DDR 400..... i have only one stick of 512

If i put another stick of 512 mb ddr 400, only then DDR is activateed... isnt it??

TWO QUESTIONS

does that mean that ryt now my pc ram is working at 200 mhz???

If i add another stick of 1 gb ddr 400, will dual channel mode work?

Arrey plz post your query properly.I didn't get you.
Do you mean to say dual channel ram?

Dude,
1) U don't need two RAMs for 'activating' DDR!!

DDR doesn't mean u must have two sticks to get it working!

2) You can have any sized RAM with your initial RAM.

dual mode will only gets activated when you two similar kinda RAM sticks in alternate slots.
for eg if you have four slots 1234

then if you put 512 DDR400 in the slot 1 and 3 dual mode will be activated automatically you will get a notice while booting and you will get performance boost.

common i know that but i think dual channel mode needs two. im sure of that fact for DDR II but dunno about the older sibling DDR . got it man?

Nope dual; chhannel is not enabled by hvaeing one stick only..
dual channel needs two sticks to double the data bandwith........

I wanted to know wether 2 different size... i mean one 512 mb n other 1 gb modules can be used or not for having dual channel????

Sup' dude, Sup'
DDR and dual channel DDR are different.

Dual channel DDR (first seen on AMD platform) needed two RAM sticks to activate it.

Normal DDR does not need two RAM sticks.

man. ive just got 2 slots
now dont tell me it wont work. it ought to cuz there would be no use of DDR memory in my pc if dual channel is not possible

my motherboard is ECS P4M800 M ... with VIA chipset

2 RAM Slots , One is Occupied by 512 mb DDR 400

JUst wanted 2 know if there will be increase in memory bandwith as well by addding one more similar stick???

:D well DDR RAM does d same thing that RDRAM, SDRAM and EDO RAM do :D

well ur DDR RAM is activated  :D weather or not u put 1 or 2 or 3 or even 4 RAM cards :D

wat u r talkin about is Dual-channel Memory Architecture which is a feature of ur motherboard

only if your motherboard supports this feature, will u get dual channel advantage by adding two memory cards

your RAM is operating @ a speed of 400MHz

to get dual channel advatage d following conditions must be fulfilled

Same capacities

Same clockspeed

Same number of chips per side

man then whats the purpose of havin DDR, they could have uswed SDRAM as well..........

wait. do u mean that even if i add more ram the effective bandwith will remain same? **** man..... now im definitely goin for an upgrade

Guys ,, can anybody shed some light on this .. I have 512MB DDR 400 single stick but in Cpu-z it shows 200Mhz max bandwidth ?? How come ? then why does it say 400 ?

I am having Mercury PSM4 v5.0 SiS 661FX mobo..
Then what does the 400 thing mean ??

EDIT: I checked in the BIOS. ... There are 3 entries in CPU pnp setup ..
1.Automatic thing ...... enabled.
2.Cpu Freq setting .....200
3.Ratio of Cpu Freq:Dram freq .......1:1
4.DRam freq .............200 Mhz.

Now If I select the auto to manual ...then I can max change the Cpu Freq setting to 255 .....and the Dram freq also changes according to the ratio used.

I have a Pentium 4 2.8GHz HT 478 socket proccy !

common i kno my MOBOdoes not support SDRAM. i wanted to say that there was not much good by incorporating DDR SDRAM in my mobo........ man if u cant use dual channel then what the heck is DDR good for?...SDRAM would have done, apart fromthe bit fast timings and lower latencies

i have the same problem this guy indian_samosa has......

d00d Dual channel memory arhitecture is a feature if the motherboard

whereas DDR SDRAM is evolution in RAM technology

just read d link i gave above
