On booting, after the POST screen,my friends laptop shows a blue screen & restarts.the error code is 0x0000007b. Windows doesnot detect the hdd.if i use a linux live cd(puppy linux),the drives do not appear.it cannot be formatted as setup says-no hdd is installed.his laptop make is hp dv9222tx.how do i solve this problem?

This message is related to the hard disk controller or the hdd itself. Are you using a SATA hdd or a Parallel ATA disk? If using SATA, try disabling SATA native mode from BIOS. In some BIOS this option will be given as Enable Legacy mode.

Was he able to boot before? When did it started happening, just after purchase or after using for some time?

Try that and report back. I hope it will solve your problem.
