Just install it on a seperate free/empty partition other than C: i.e ur windows XP partition
it will be fine

If you don't want the XP, then install 7 over that XP partition, but if you want both, then you will have to create another partition (according to your need), or use an existing partition fro windows 7.

If you are too paranoid about your data, then copy your existing data from partition A (say) to partition B and install windows 7 on partition A

dude installing ur win 7 on separate wont help you get ur dual boot system in place bcoz as soon as win 7 will be installed that partition will be marked active and sytem will boot into win 7 directly without os selection menu(mostly occurs when installing win7 side by xp) so after installing win7 use EasyBCD to setup bootmenu for dual boot.

Installing on a separate partition is enough.

didnt happen with me. Installing Xp after Win 7 takes direct to Xp. But installing Win 7 after xp I could boot into Xp without any modification.

@serpent16: I hope u have separate partitions for win XP & win 7 (in which u will install)

ex: Drive C: WIndows XP
Drive D: Windows 7
Drive E: Local

Newer operating system bootloaders have better compatibility with thier legacy counterparts.
Only the Windows 8 Developer Preview does not recognize XP. But it does recognize Vista/7/Server.

Ill try keeping only win 7,The only problem is my parents they find win 7 really confusing as they say the font is small, they cant understand where the window goes when it minimizes :(..And when i said them to update they say their friend is still using windows 95 why do i want win 7 :(

It is quite easy. Make a 40 or 45 GB partition on your present hard disk, remember its name and install W7 to it. Once installed, you will be able to choose between XP and 7. The problem occurs only if you install XP after 7.

Looks like i messed up with my words in referring to the bootloader prob of xp and win7/8.
Thanks guys for pointing it out ...problem occurs only if xp is installed after win 7(can be fixed with easyBCD anyway)!!TESTED & Assured!
