Suppose you have numbers in Column A, go to cell B1 and type the following forumla there
=LEFT(A1,4)
go to right, down position of cell B1, when you mouse cusros changes into thin black plus sign, double click the left mouse button

This is copy all the formula

Divide text across cells.
1. Select the range of cells that contains the text values. The range can be any number of rows tall, but no more than one column wide.
Note There must be one or more blank columns to the right of the selected column or the data to the right of the selected column will be overwritten.
2. On the Data menu, click Text to Columns.
3. Follow the instructions in the Convert Text to Columns Wizard to specify how you want to divide the text into columns.
Note:
***On the Convert Text to Columns Wizard in the second step select fixed width
***I tried this successfully , please write back if u face any problems.

Looking forward to hear from u soon.
