sol to qs 1:- go to system properties from control panel.click advance...then click startup and recovery.
then there will be a button "edit'.click it.
you will get a file in notepad opened something like this:-

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows"

here delete the line which represents windows me or 98.
in this case its the last line...so delete c:\="microsoft windows"

remember if u did something wrong...ur system wont boot so backup this file before doing some engg.
or you can always format both drives and install just windows xp

solution to problem no 2:-
click start button...select run.
type "msconfig"
click startup and unselect anything starting from norton or symantec.
u can also remove other things which u dont want at startup.

and congrats me this is my 100th post.
i m a warm up nerd now....yahoooo

as far as norton subscription is concerned download the "subscription enhancer" ;) your job is done of simply uninstall and reinstall the software.

well this happens when u have formated the HDD with /s switch..thus system files are installed on ur HDD(command.com)..my experience is deling "c:\="microsoft windows" wont help as it apperes again n again....so what u can do is reduce the boot options time to 0 ..thus it wont show it again....

the above posts answer your qs, i guess.
and CONGRATS DINESH SIGH !!!!!! :)
if your norton has expired and is due for renewal, dump it and go for avast or avg.

Hey dinesh_singh,
well in case you have a safer way to deal the Boot Options why one wud go with the one screws up.

Goto Start>Run>MsConfig>Boot.ini Tab
See the Image:
*www.dld.go.th/ict/article/xp/xp02-1.jpg

Click the OS you want to startup and click set as default. and then reduce the Timeout to '0'.

In case, you have only one OS and u wud like to delete the other from boot.ini file, click "Check all boot paths" if its invalid, you can delete that.
