HD4770 OC
Core - 850MHz(gos to 970MHz actually)
Memory - 1000MHz(goes to 1150MHz actually)

This setting beats the HD4850 by more than 7% and matches or beats the GTS250.
And HD4850 can be OCed:
Core - 700MHz(from 625MHz)
Memory - 1100MHz(varies, max 1150MHz)

But at this setting, the card JUST would beat an OCed HD4770.
Hmm.... a GTS250 is a 9800GTX+ right ? But I guess that too overclocks a lot.

^^Not much, core goes up to 800MHz(but very high and dangerous settings really) and memory depends on manufacturer, shader too goes by 100MHz.

guess thats because of its speed. its already as good as overclocked leaving very little room for more.

Where did you find benchmarks of HD4770 OCmax GTS250 OCmax ?

HD4850 is seriously sandwiched by HD4770 and HD4870.

HD4770, though it little bit slower than HD4770 is enough for gaming till 1680x1050 and anything above, GTX260/HD4870 is a must as I think even a HD4850 stutters at fullHD in many games if you turn on eye candy to maximum.

I would suggest either HD4770 or HD4870/GTX260
