hard drive unresponsive

hi..
i have a samsung hard drive which has been posing some problems. it's a 80gb HDD, but only 37GB of the drive can be accessed. the rest of the space cannot be formatted or partitioned. if i try to format or partition the remaining space, the disk becomes unresponsive and goes offline, i.e., even the original 37GB is not available. only on a system restart does it show up again. how do i fix it?
another thing, the label on the HDD says that its only a 40GB HDD. but fdisk, windows disk manager and partition magic all recognise it as a 80GB HDD...

Check the jumper settings on the HDD
There is a particular setting in which the capacity of HDD is limited
Also what motherboard are you using?

must be a jumper prob as said by Rachitar. it's very confusing that partition magic says 80GB and lable says 40 GB. It must be under warranty, get it checked at samsung service center, samsung has good service.

Even if the problem is solved i think u should report 40-80 controversy to Samsung and get it replaced.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but.. If the HDD label says its a 40GB disk, how can it possibly be an 80 GB disk ?

All hard disk manufacturers specify the capacity in a different way - when they say 40GB it means 40,000,000,000 bytes. This actually works out to ~ 37GB. This matches the same amount you've specified.

i kno bout limiting the capacity to 40GB...but thats not the case here...

Did u buy 40GB or 80GB harddisk? Call samsung and get it checked. After that if u think that u have been cheated then get it replaced/ refund from ur vendor. If he doesn't cooperate then take strict action against him/her.
