But syllables are supposed to have one sound in general. Don't know about Japanese though.

No I mean, in Japanese all the syllables occupy an equal amount of space/time. Like aa-ri-ga-tou, wa-sa-bi etc. but in English it can vary like op-por-tu......-nity, here the syllable tu is more important and and so is pronounced longer

Never thought about it like that. Will have to check whether there are any such rules when writing in English.
