Getting an HD6850

funkysourav

What The.... !!!
Hi Guys
at long last i am finally prepared to make my Mega Purchase

I am gonna buy the HD6850 :D

But i am kinda confused on which brand or model to buy, That's where i need your help

I am interested in the Sapphire 6850 reference card as listed here
Sapphire HD 6850 GDDR5 1GB Graphic Card ― Lynx - The Audio , Electronics And Computer Online Store In India
the price is below the 10k mark which is a relief:)
I am not buying online though, purchase will be made locally:neutral:

I need to ask you these questions
1)is it worth getting HD6850 over the HD5770? 1600x900 res
2)can i safely go for the brand Sapphire? (considering the recent 2 year-3 year warranty yo yo) does anyone have experience of Sapphire RMA?
3)should i consider the higher priced MSI HD6850? (higher by almost 1.3k)
4)Would this fit in my cabby CM310?

here's the rest of my Config in case you are interested
AMD ATHLON II X4 635 PROCCY
GIGABYTE 785GMT-US2H MOBO
CORSAIR 2X2 GB VALUE DDR3 RAM
CORSAIR VX450 PSU
SAMSUNG B2030 20"@1600x900

1. Yes, all day 6850 is better than 5770. Because

HD5770 128 bit + 800 Unified Shaders + Memory Bandwith 76 GB/s

HD6850 256 bit + 960 Unified Shaders + Memory Bandwith 128 GB/s

So 6850 is sure faster than 5770.

2. Yes, you can. But make sure of the warranty before you buy, from the dealer.

3.If that MSI one is like Twin Frozer or Hawk, then it's worth, otherwise stick to Sapphire and OC it a bit. Way to go.

4. It will fit, but wait for others to comment

thanks Rajkumar
the MSi one comes with an undisputed 3 year warranty
while Sapphire is a little under doubt

MSI one is reference not the twin frozr one
MSI R6850 PM2D1GD5 Graphics Card
though its an open cooler type design

@funkysourav: 6850 is obviously better than 5770.
Go for sapphire better than palit.warranty is also good
but check if vx450 supports 6850

@funkysourav: Better stick with Sapphire and AFAIK Sapphire comes with 3 years (2+1) warranty. Check with your dealer.

@KaranTh85

VX450W will easy accommodate the 6850, look at the rest of his rig. Pretty simple setup. Although, he might opt for VX550W later on(maybe after few months), if he is planning on CF the GPU. Otherwise VX450 will do.

^^ no no
no CF for me
Crossfire profiles on AMD are terrible
and i don't need that kinda power for my 900p display
6850 should be an overkill already

i am more concerned about The Sapphire RMA experience
Actuall warranty duration(site says 2 years, but a trader in TE produced a letter from Akshay which said 3 years complete )

Yup, its extended to 3 years. So you don't worry about that part.

Also CF profiles are getting better these days and will soon compete with SLI's. But still it's your choice to go for CF or not?

And what monitor do you have? As you are saying 6850 is a overkill, i guess you play at 1280*1024.... :D :D

@ funkysourav

Your choice of gpu is great. Go for the cheapest 6850. Sapphire one is really good. You can also look at asus 6850 direct cu. Terrific custom cooler and gives good overclocking headroom. Don't know its price though. If its between 10-11k, i recommend it handsdown.

Talking about corsair vx 450, it can easily handle a gtx 560 or radeon 6950.
So radeon 6850 is a piece of cake for it.

I also have an alternate suggestion for you. Hold your horses until gts 550 releases and then make a purchase. Its just around the corner. Will be definitely worth waiting and can push prices further.

You already saw waht amd had to do when gtx 560 released. They had to slash prices.
Gts 550 will hopefully do the same.

@Vickybat
yeah Satya that's what i have been thinking too
that i should wait a little longer
but there's no definite date on GTS550 earlier than march 20
and you know Indian dealers, even if the price gets slashed
they will scratch their heads for 2 months before implementing the price changes :(
Seriously, this waiting is getting on my nerves

Actually these things are getting reflected pretty quickly in online shops. The same happened with factory overclocked gtx560's and 6950's. Even 6870 is avaiable at 12.5k in yantra online including taxes. So price cuts are imminent.

Check this for more info on GTS 550 HERE. Launch date is expected to be 15th march and will retain the ti branding as of gtx 560.

Yes, i am "satyajit swain". "Vicky" is my nick name and "bat" cause i'm a huge batman fan.
