Ubuntu has the b5 version and the Check for update option is grayed out. Weird!

Wait for a couple of hours. It may show up in the repos. But you can manually download and install FF, whatever version you like anytime.

I wonder why you want to belittle Ubuntu at all places when you have no idea of how things work.

Ubuntu 8.04 is an LTS release. So they decided to ship a beta version of Firefox as Firefox 2 will be too outdated in 3 years from now. That doesn't mean they'll release updates for every small pre-release version.

Pre-release versions are meant for people ready to try it and possibly test it. It is not for everyone. So there is nothing wrong if Ubuntu does not get RC2 as an update. If they take more than a month to supply the final release then you may complain.

If you really want to try RC2 on Ubuntu, it is not that difficult. Download from Mozilla's site extract the archive and use it.

The "Check for Updates" is disabled in Ubuntu version of Firefox because in Ubuntu all software setup are streamlined (unless user decides to choose his own way) unlike windows where you may have 50 apps checking and downloading updates from 50 different sites. Some don't even come with auto-update and user has to check the programs site often and see if any critical security flaw has been fixed. And all those freewares filled to the brim with spyware and adware. :D
