Extremely slow and sluggish DVD Drive

My DVD drive has become too slow recently.. it takes lots of time to read and write data. For ex., it takes around 3 hrs. to write a DVD. Whenever data is being read/written to a DVD [or even a CD.. or anything in that drive].. the whole system becomes sluggish to the point that even the cursor doesn't move freely. I cannot watch movies on DVD due to this. Also, installations from optical media don't complete or take forever.

Earlier I thought it was a software issue, coz I reinstalled XP once and the problem was over. It resurfaced again.. but this time even a reinstall is not helping.

I have set DMA on for all the Primary/Secondary IDE channels. I have tried reinstalling the firmware for my drives, but the problem persists.

thanks

1) Check the IDE cables. If they are old, better replace them.
2) Get Philips DVD cleaner and clear the lens. (Don't ever buy DVD cleaner that comes with a liquid solution. Dry DVD cleaners are better than wet DVD cleaners)

lens cleaner just uses a brush on a specific track so as to clean the lens when the brush comes in contact with the lens. So.. i think they must be the same.

So, suppose in a DVD writer separate lenses are used for reading /writing CDs and DVDs?

the lens is the same. It's the wavelength of the laser which is different. So 2 laser diodes are employed for cd and dvd respectively.
