Hello Guyz

I have a dvd region problem. My dvd rom can read any dvd's that i write but it cannot read
the dvd's that come free with digit as well as chip magazine.I googled for this problem and
i came to conclusion that its the problem of dvd region.
My current DVD region is set to 1.Now when i try to change my dvd region
then it says
"DVD Region Change Error

Unable to update region setting. Please make sure the drive contains a region 5 media and you have administartion
privilege"

I'm absolutely sure that i have admin privilege.i even tried it to change it while disabling the drive but after i disable the drive
dvd region tab dissapears.
When i tried to change it in safe mode then also i recieve the same error.
I also tried softwares like DVD REGION FREE + CSS but the result is same.
I also read that this technique is used to prevent privacy and i have already read about encoding stuff.
But i live in INDIA and i bought my laptop here only.
I also learned that i should upgrade my dvd firmware but i cannot get updated firmware anywhere.
I also compared my & my fathers laptop registry but everything under IDE was same.
I Would also like to know that if i install 98se on my m/c then will this prob avail because if i'm right then this technology was evolved in 2004 so it should work on 98se.
plz help me.Thanks in advance

My M/c Configuration is
WinXP sp2
256 mb ram
Intel (R) 852/855 GM/GME Chipset
Philips CDRW/DVD CDD5263

plz help me.Thanks in advance.

DVD region factor comes into play only in respect of region coded DVD movie discs and not DVD data discs like Digit DVDs. So when you say Digit discs are not being read, it most probably points to a problem in your optical drive. If you can, try your optical drive on a friend's computer. If the same problem persists, it confirms it.

From what you have indicated your m/c and the drive are almost four years old.You may as well replace the DVD drive instead of breaking your head, considering that DVD writers are very cheap these days.

Is you laptop of dell brand?? Have you tried reading Dual layer DVD with this drive??

I found this page which details technical specifications:
*support.dell.com/support/edocs/storage/P77261/en/spec.htm

It say that the drive does not support dual layer DVDs under Applicable Format for read function but at the same time it says that read speed for dual layer DVD is 2.3X ~ 5.5X.
So take a look at the page.
I am thinking that either your does not support dual layer DVDs which you are trying to read or drive's lense is not functioning properly.

yep, what sundeepk has stated makes sense. Try to get hold of one single layer Digit/PC World/Chip DVD and check whether your drive reads it.
A quick google search reveals that many people have experienced read problems even with CD-Rs and CD-RWs due to disc compatibility problems.
IMO, on the whole this Combo optical drive, whether it came with the HP laptop or Dell laptop or on a desktop had proved to be low on reliability.
