digital camera battery issue

hi

i have a Nikon COOLPIX L4 digital camera-- compact, 4 megapixel, powered by a pair of AA size Ni-MH or Alkaline batteries. it normally gives about 40-50 shots on Alkaline and around 90 on Ni-MH.

But of late its been draining the batteries pretty quickly. A fresh pair of Duracell Alkaline batteries drained out after a few minutes of configuring and then abt 10 shots, few of them with flash, all at full resoluton.

Please advice as to what might be causing this battery drain, and what should be done?

thanks
