The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
Retry the operation. If you still get this message, try to continue. If you are able to continue, you might want to check the results of the running application. Otherwise, terminate the application, then restart it. If you still get this message, contact your technical support group or the supplier of the running application.

it's a part of windows :) ....no concrete solutions....
The NTVDM is a file named NTVDM.EXE in Windows\System32 folder...
i think NTVDM stands for NT Virtual DOS Machine, that is DOS emulator?

Mate, first of all there is no gurantee that 16 bit DOS applications will work in XP due to a no of reasons. Second try right clicking on the 16 bit app and goto backward compatibility. Try using windows 95 or windows 98 settings and see if that works.

MS has solution for 16 bit DOS subsystem errors caused by files Autoexec.nt , config.nt etc...but they dont have any solutions for this...
replacing the NTVDM.EXE file....hmmm....before that post the Log file of HijackThis, let's check if it's caused by any viruses or something....

I've seen the problems at lots of places around the Internet, where older apps just stop working or generate an error. As far as I can see and search, there's no fix except to try the Windows XP Compatibility Mode or get a Windows XP compatible version of the program.
Usually if the NTVDM CPU encounters a program written in a very early version and makes inappropriate system calls, then it usually terminates it and signals an error. It can also happen when the execuatable of the program that's being run or any dependant DLL is corrupted.

Microsoft has a solution for Win NT, might work here too....

This behavior can occur if you use an incorrect version of the Command.com file. For example, this issue is known to occur if you use a Command.com file included in Microsoft Windows 95, dated 7/11/95.

swatkat already asked you, as did I. What program are you using. Details please. What is it for? What does it do? And if possible, (if you or someone you know wrote it) what language was it written in?
