core i7 vs AMD Fx-8350

I noticed the Hardware buying guide advises to buy AMD FX 8350. Are Intel core i7s not good? Why is AMD preferred over Intel?

No one "prefers" AMD over Intel in the way you are thinking. What's suggested is best considering the budget.

It's not my intention to buy a PC, I just thought that core i7s are better than AMD CPU's in the ultra high end section and just wanted to confirm my doubts.

It has to do with budget constraints. The primary focus in guides is to have the best GPU for the build, and it is better to compromise on CPU than the GPU - provided, the CPU does not bottleneck the GPU. (FX 8350 + R9 290) > (i7 4770K + R9 280X) as far as gaming experience is concerned.

If budget is not a problem, then i7 performs better than AMD in most cases. It may still be overkill for games at the moment, but may be better utilized if next gen games do use multiple cores (>4) and HT.

Back to school!!
Our goal is to fit the best combination of hardware for a budget, if we can drop CPU performance just a bit we can push in a better GPU, or HDD, if money is no bar, nothing touches the Core i7 lineup.

An i7 perferoms better than an FX 8350 but 8350 costs half the pri of i7 4770, making it a great VFM especially for multithreaded tasks. 8350 is suggested if the budget is not high enough to accommodate an i7 4xxxk or i5 4xxxk and a decent Z87 board.

all depends on your budget and the apps you may use. We can not say whether amd is VFM or intel is VFM without mentioning the budget.

But don't AMD processors tend to get a little more hotter?
Doesn't that compromise the life of a CPU in the long run?

I have an amd lappy Hp pavillion g6 1318ax to be precise. Played many games on it for a year but now it gets heated up so badly that there is a thermal shutdown even when I'm playing cs1.6 or Warcraft 3

thermal paste might have been dried out. re-applying may help.

Laptop heating issue is very very less likely to be caused by Processor or any other component heating but due to the poor design of the chassis and low quality material usage. Most of the budget APU based HP laptops' chassis are completely made of plastic and the heat vent positions are also not optimized. So they are bound to get heated while running demanding applications for long time.
You should open the laptop and check the condition of the exhaust fan, whether it is dusty or working properly. Also get a standard Laptop cooler from Corsair, priced around 900 bucks. They will help you to keep the lappy cool during heavy usage.

If it were to get heated after long hours of gaming or something like that it would have been okay... but now it gets heated even while using less intensive stuff like cs 1.6 or even warcraft 3...Anyway while it worked it was a great lappy, played mp3,codbo2,tesV,farcry3 ,etc at medium settings
I will try to clean all that. Will have to make a thread for it.
I already own a zebronics nc 500 cooler though.

@Aakarshan Oh I forgot to mention I added extra 4 gb ram when I bought it so.
Also you have to play with laptop plugged in i.e. On A.C. power and your lappy should be in high performance mode.
Well I played MW1,MW2,MW3,black ops 1,2;max payne 3, halo2, Farcry 3, Crysis 2, Dishonoured, Assasins Creed 1,2 , brotherhood, revelations, Saints Row 3, specs ops the line, etc....Like I told before its a great lappy well except for the heating issues.

That I have not been able to solve yet but as suggested by harshilsharma63 above you can look into changing thermal paste and getting it dust free.
I am however thinking of getting a desktop for my gaming needs, and will sell that lappy and get another low end one for all the portability purposes.
