computer is working very slow & unstable

I am having Atholon 1.1. cpu and DFI motherboard with 40 GB hard disk and 256 SD RAM.But my operating system win XP is working very slowly and sometimes it crashes. Not more than one application can run at a time and that too run very slowly. In case of TV tuner card voice comes latter than image and in case of music file of any format, when it is played it also run with disturbance. Even I Switched over to win 2000 &win 98 but the problem still remians the same. I have already changed my RAM. In my hard disk there is some bad sectors also. Plz suggest me some way out

if u have bad sectors get rid of that disk before u loose ur data

Better backup your data before a total breakdown occurs.
Can you specify what kind of error messages you get on blue crash screens? i.e. Technical information area?
If its of the series Stop: 0*0000xxxx, then i'm sorry to say that your hard disk might be on the way out. See if you can get a new one under warranty.

I guess use a good tool like seatools or discwizard from seagate.... it may be a reason for such low performance....

also is the performance problem is started after u installed some specific application or this occurs in general... to ensure.. just install xp and then see the performance and then installed one by one application using system restore point... if any application is faulty then u will soon get to know.....and update it...

Also get ur system clean of viruses spywares and trojans... they can also slow down ur system....

i think u shud perform defragmentation of ur HDD on regular basis..........

Check whether DMA is enabled or not.

try to defregment your HDD

run a complete virus scan using a good antivirus such as AVG in safe mode and also scan for spyware too.

check the startup items loaded at boot time and also check the system performance using the performance tab in windows task manager.
