CD-writer problem

Hi,

I would be very grateful if anyone provided me help regarding this one. I have a peculiar problem regarding my dumb mercury cd-writer bought around 1 1/2 years back. It has forgotten how to read data from CD-R's and CD-RW's at one try. When I insert these CD-R's, the front LED just keeps on glowing and the eject button does not work. I have to insert something like a pin on the small hole in the front panel to eject the disc. After trying this for about 10-12 times, it would read the disc....ie if I am lucky. All these discs are without any scratches and there is no problem accessing the data on the disc on my friend's CD-ROM drive. Sometimes it would simply refuse to read the disc. I have cleaned the drive's head and that would not also help. But writing CD's is not a problem.

Is there no option except buying a new drive? In addition to a DVD-ROM, I also need the writer. Buying a DVD-writer may not be possible at this very moment. It maybe that the drive's laser reading mechanism has become faulty...but I do not know. This problem started a few days back.

Any suggestions?
