My PC specs are : Intel-815EEA MB, Pentium III-800 MHZ, 256 MB RAM, Mcafee VirusScan Enterprise 8.0.0.

In the recent past the following two messages are frequently displayed

1. VirusScan Alert! ( This message is displayed by Mcafee)

Pathname: C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe::Read file
Detected As: bo:heap
State: Blocked by Buffer Overflow Protection
Application: C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe

When I searched web, some where it was suggested to disable buffer overflow protection in virus scan console of Mcafee, I did that, but I am not sure this is the correct solution. Will it harm my computer? Virus definitions are dated 27/04/09.

2. Winlogon.exe – Application error

The instruction at “0x03354408” referenced memory at “0x00000000”. The memory could not be “written”

Click on OK to terminate the program.
Click on CANCEL to debug the program.

Whatever I select OK or CANCEL the PC reboots.

Please help me.

Maybe your antivirus delete the svchost.exe. It.s very vital file. You can restore it using backup, repair using your xp cd before boot or you reinstall your xp
